Prevention

According to American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, all children should see a dentist and establish a dental home no later than 12 months of age. A dental home is an ongoing relationship between the dentist and patient where dental care is delivered in a comprehensive, continuously accessible, coordinate, and family-centered way.

Anticipatory guidance and preventative dental care are important throughout life, especially at a young age.

Exam and Cleanings

  • Regular check up and cleanings should be scheduled with your dentist every 6 months. Digital x-rays, if necessary, may also be taken during the visit. Dental x-rays may be necessary to diagnose and monitor oral disease, evaluate dental alveolar trauma, as well as monitor dentofacial development and the progress of therapy.

Fluoride

  • The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry affirms that the use of fluoride as an adjunct in the prevention of decay is safe and effective.

  • Fluoride varnish is typically placed at the end of the cleaning appointment for prevention.

  • Please let us know if you would like to skip fluoride treatment.

Sealant

  • Sealant has been used for nearly 5 decades and has demonstrated its effectiveness in preventing decay on the chewing surfaces.

  • Sealants are typically placed on the chewing surfaces of 1st adult molars and 2nd adult molars.

  • BPA- free sealant products are available.

Minimally invasive decay management

  • Several techniques may be used to restore, arrest or prevent the progression of decay if a traditional approach is not possible.

  • Fluoride varnish can be applied every 3 months to delay the progression of cavities.

  • Silver diamine fluoride may be used to arrest cavities or delay the progression of cavities.

  • Conservative removal of cavities can be done, sometimes without numbing, and followed by dental restorations.

Dental Treatment

Dental Fillings

  • We only use tooth colored material at our practice.

  • BPA- free products are available.

Dental Crowns

  • We offer stainless steel crowns which are easy for children to adapt to.

  • We also offer esthetic white crowns.

Nerve Treatment

  • Nerve treatment may be needed when decay has become advanced enough. Without nerve treatment, children can experience pain, infection, or the loss of a tooth before adult teeth are ready to come in.

Removal of Teeth

  • Sometimes removal of teeth are necessary to prevent infection, pain, or abnormal eruption of adult teeth.

  • We also offer simple removal of permanent teeth for the purpose of orthodontics.

Space Maintainer

  • When a child’s baby teeth are lost prematurely, a space holder may be necessary to maintain the space for the adult teeth.

Oral Sedation

  • A conscious sedation that is completed in our office.

  • Prior to dental treatment, your child will drink a liquid medicine. He/she may become relaxed and drowsy.

  • Vital signs are monitored throughout the entire appointment.
